Watkins and Howard Lake to State; Watkins to Play Princeton |
 |
It took four wins in four days, but the Howard Lake Orphans topped all four Central Valley League teams in the Region 11C tournament in a row to take the top seed heading into the state tournament this weekend. Watkins will play as the second seed out of the region.
After Howard Lake defeated Luxemburg on Thursday, a 7-inning no-hitter by Shane Heber toppled Pearl Lake 12-0. A very close, very interesting rain-delayed game on Saturday and Sunday against Kimball saw the game end on a walk-off grand slam, sending the Express home. The sweep of the CVL was completed later on Sunday when the Orphans came back from a 5-0 deficit to top Watkins for the top seed.
With the top seed, Howard Lake drafted Matthew Pennertz from Eden Valley to go with them to state. Both teams play their first game of the tournament on Saturday night in Arlington. Watkins plays the top seed from Region 1C, the Princeton Panthers, at 5:00pm. The Orphans follow that game against the second seed from Region 1C, the Forrest Lake Brewers. Good luck to both teams in the 2009 State Tournament!
