Four-Run Inning Bolsters Clippers Past Hawks
Despite pulling out to a lead with a run in the first
inning, the Hawks were unable to hold the lead as the Clippers scored four
times in the second inning on their way to a 7-4 victory. Eric Malvin added a two-run homerun for the
Clippers (3-0 in CVL). Mike Beier
started the game on the mound and Bruce Geislinger relieved him in the eighth
for the Clippers, while Al Faber went the distance for the Hawks. The Hawks rallied in the ninth as Junior
Geislinger had a two-run double, but that rally only amounted to the two runs
as the game finished 7-4.
Lakers Sink Hawks with 7 Run Inning

On a very windy Sunday afternoon, the Hawks were finally
able to open Central Valley League action against the Pearl Lake Lakers this
past weekend. The outcome wasn’t quite
what the Hawks had hoped for, as they lost to the Lakers 10-9.
Things were
looking bleak from the beginning for the Hawks, as they fell behind in the
second as the Lakers found the gaps for four hits, which led to two Laker
runs. The Hawks responded with one of
their own in the third, as pitcher Dan Hansen drove in Matthew Pennertz from
second to cut the lead to 2-1.
The third
inning brought a scare for the Hawks, as Hansen had to take himself out of the
game due to a shoulder injury while pitching.
Al Faber came in to pitch from third base, and shut down Pearl Lake
for the next two innings. In the top of
the fourth, the Hawks took their first lead as they scored four runs, all with
two outs, and then added one in the fifth to lead 6-2 heading into the home
half of the inning.
The Lakers
were able to again find the holes in the defense in the fifth as they scored
seven times in the inning on four ground ball hits, a double, two errors, and
one walk, as they now lead 9-6. But the
Hawks didn’t go away. They scratched
together a run in the sixth inning and two in the eighth to tie the game at
nine apiece. The bottom of the eighth
again found the Lakers scoring, this time a lone run off of reliever Matthew
Pennertz. That would put the Lakers over
the top as the Hawks were unable to mount a final rally and fell to a final
score of 10-9.

In the
game, Al Faber led the way with three hits and two RBI. Matthew
Pennertz added a lone hit, but scored
three runs and drove in two. Dan Hansen,
Dan Berg, Joe Thiel, and Stephen Pennertz also added hits for the
Hawks, who
left ten runners on base in the game. For Pearl Lake, Mitch Denne
picked up the win on the mound. Bryan Hennen had the only extra-base
hit in the game, a double in the fifth. Will Hervin, Steve Loesch, and
Tommy Linn also added two hits to the fifteen hits the Lakers had in
the game.
